Ivanhoe Residences Anchored on one of suburban Melbourne’s highest points, its layered shape is reminiscent of a landlocked ship navigating its way into a compelling future. As with most important buildings designed to sit upon a hill, Ivanhoe is made up of a collection of forms. It has horizontal parts, tall vertical
elements, asymmetry and a visually appealing composition. Huge, singular timber slatted elements formed in vertical and semi-horizontal angles, wrap around several levels at the base of the building. It is visually powerful, appearing to enclose the building from the outside. Internally it creates a series of shifting patterns of light and view. Imagined on several levels including a podium, the building divides into a multi-faceted construction while consistently maintaining its curved facade. The building’s design is a direct result of the conditions of the local environment. These influences can clearly be seen in the resolved design producing a building which is a natural fit for its location.
